Medical Terminology Browsers - How Usable Are Them for Describing Clinical Archetypes?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Clinical terminologies are a major concern in medical informatics, as they are key to provide medical systems with higher levels of interoperability. Large terminologies as SNOMED CT are gaining presence in practical applications. In a related but different direction, archetypes or data type templates are becoming widespread as interchange mechanisms for medical information. Archetypes support mapping to terminologies, in a process that is typically done by the experts developing the archetype. It has been argued that terminology browsers are not appropriate for the task of helping clinical experts in the mapping process. This paper reports usability studies on two popular SNOMED CT browsers when used as tools for mapping archetypes. Empirical findings suggest that problems are due to the exposure of internal details of the terminology in the interfaces and the fact that they do not provide clear distinctions on the kinds of entities encoded in SNOMED CT.

Integrating Detailed Clinical Models Into Application Development Tools
Several groups are currently working on defining detailed clinical models (also called templates or archetypes) that are refinements of abstract medical models like the HL7 (Health Level Seven) Reference Information Model. At IHC, we have created over 3,000 detailed clinical models in the last five years. These models have become an essential part of the architecture of our electronic medical r...
متن کاملContribution of Clinical Archetypes, and the Challenges, towards Achieving Semantic Interoperability for EHRs
OBJECTIVES The objective is to introduce 'clinical archetype' which is a formal and agreed way of representing clinical information to ensure interoperability across and within Electronic Health Records (EHRs). The paper also aims at presenting the challenges building quality labeled clinical archetypes and the challenges towards achieving semantic interoperability between EHRs. METHODS Twent...
متن کاملApplying an Archetype-Based Approach to Electroencephalography/Event-Related Potential Experiments in the EEGBase Resource
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying openEHR (an archetype-based approach for electronic health records representation) to modeling data stored in EEGBase, a portal for experimental electroencephalography/event-related potential (EEG/ERP) data management. The study evaluates re-usage of existing openEHR archetypes and proposes a set of new archetypes t...
متن کاملRetrospective checking of compliance with practice guidelines for acute stroke care: a novel experiment using openEHR’s Guideline Definition Language
BACKGROUND Providing scalable clinical decision support (CDS) across institutions that use different electronic health record (EHR) systems has been a challenge for medical informatics researchers. The lack of commonly shared EHR models and terminology bindings has been recognised as a major barrier to sharing CDS content among different organisations. The openEHR Guideline Definition Language ...
متن کاملIntegration of tools for binding archetypes to SNOMED CT
BACKGROUND The Archetype formalism and the associated Archetype Definition Language have been proposed as an ISO standard for specifying models of components of electronic healthcare records as a means of achieving interoperability between clinical systems. This paper presents an archetype editor with support for manual or semi-automatic creation of bindings between archetypes and terminology s...
